| For years the long distance business has been dominated by the BIG carrier companies like AT&T, Sprint, and MCI. However, with the Telecommunications Act of 1996, small local telephone companies were given the green light to provide long distance services. In 1996, four innovative locally owned phone companies came together to form North Dakota Long Distance (NDLD). North Dakota Telephone Company in Devils Lake, Polar Communications in Park River, United Telephone in Langdon, and Dakota Central Cooperative in Carrington saw this partnership as an avenue to extend the local services to existing and future customers. | ||

| Five additional companies came aboard in 1998. These companies are Dickey Rural Telephone in Ellendale, Midstate in Stanley, BEK Communications in Steele, Reservation Telephone Cooperative in Parshall, and Northwest Communications Cooperative in Ray. In 1999, Moore & Liberty Telephone Company in Enderlin and Griggs County Telephone Company in Cooperstown (now better known as MLGC) teamed up to become the 10th owner company in North Dakota Long Distance. | ||

On August 23, 1999, USWEST pulled out as the IntraLATA* default carrier in all areas where they were not the local exchange company (LEC). In order for IntraLATA long distance service to continue, a long distance carrier was needed. NDLD was already supplying service to many of these areas and was designated as the IntraLATA default carrier in all ten owner company's areas.
